How well do you know your spirit?

To do any work at all we must know ourselves.

After nearly 40 years on this earth, I have begun to understand more of who I am. In the rapid crush of years of marriage and family and developing a life and career, who I was at my essence certainly took a backseat.

But the last several years, I’ve been towed in closer to the boat of my soul — in a way I never had before.

This looping back to the inner core of me began, as it always seems to, with some life-altering experiences including the death of my beloved mother from cancer in 2011.

But it’s been a metamorphosis since then, and at the same time, a returning.

I have begun to know the characteristics of my spirit, the content of my soul and how I want to express those two things in my life. It’s been quite a journey!

Today, during my morning meditation, I let my spirit loose and saw how clearly it was comprised of three main emotions/experiences: joy, love and inspiration.

The task of my ego, or thinking mind, is to find ways to express my spirit in all I do and to understand how to feed that spirit.

One way is through my writing. I need no return to anywhere to understand that.

The other is by offering it up to you: What is your spirit comprised of? If you had to name the three main spiritual gifts you bring to this body and life, what would they be? As you read this, you’re likely not sure and that is just fine. Answering the deep questions takes time. Sit still and breathe, think loosely and then take the first step of opening yourself up to knowing your spirit in a deeper way.

They’ll return to you.
